ViewThe coffee supply chain is quite complex as there are various different routes that your coffee can come from as well as different countries. Coffee is grown across the world but the biggest exporters of green coffee beans are Brazil, Colombia, Sumatra and Ethiopia.
Small farm holders are an important part of the supply chain with 80% of all global coffee production coming from small farms. That makes up 25 million farmers who helped to export 6.2 tonnes of coffee in 2011 which earnt $23.5 billion for the producing countries.
Our roasters ensure that their coffee supplies are from ethical, transparent sources which can be traced back to their from or co-operative of origin.
A traditional coffee supply chain for a small farm is from the small farm the beans are passed onto a processing centre before being moved onto a local export company. The local export company will then move the coffee beans abroad to a coffee roaster or to a trading house / importer. From the coffee roasters it is turned into the produce that you buy online or in the shop.
For a large coffee estate they often miss out on the processing centre, but not always, because they process the beans on their own estate. Once processed they are again passed onto a local export company who ships them to an importer or coffee roaster. From here it is turned into what you would buy online or in the shop.
When it comes to the best coffee supply chains, the use of co-operatives is used to benefit the farmers. Co-operatives are a good way for small farm holders to pool resources and guarantee a fair price for their crop. They reduce the cost of external services such as processors and exporters by providing this within the co-operative.
A preferred coffee supply route for a small farm would see the farm produce being sent to a co-operative before being exported straight to a coffee roaster in the consuming country.
A preferred coffee supply route for a large estate would see the estate grow the beans, process the beans and then export the beans themselves straight to a coffee roaster.
