Arabica coffee is the second most popular type of coffee with it contributing to around 40% of coffee production in the world. The coffee robusta beans used to make it come from the Coffea Canephora plant.
Where does Robusta coffee come from?
Robusta coffee originated in central and western sub-Saharan Africa. It is now grown across the world but mostly in the Eastern Hemisphere in Africa and Indonesia. The largest producer of Robusta coffee is Vietnam. The largest producers of robusta coffee include Vietnam, Brazil, Indonesia, India and Uganda. The robusta coffee plant is a robust plant, as the name suggests, and it can grow in hot temperatures that exceed 30°C. However it does require a lot of water to grow healthily. These plants grow at low altitudes from sea level to 600 metres above sea level.

Robusta coffee beans characteristics
Coffee with robusta beans is earthy and has a bitter flavour. It is often known for having woody and earthy notes in it’s flavour profile. The aftertaste is similar to the taste of peanuts. The presence and strengths of these flavours depends on the quality of the bean as well as how they are roasted and stored. Robusta coffee beans also have more caffeine than arabica beans as well as less sugar. This contributes to the stronger flavour.
The aroma of robusta coffee is often described as a sweet, earthy, wooden aroma. They can smell like peanuts before they are roasted.
