ViewYou’re about to find out all you need to know in terms of what a cappuccino is and its origins.
So, what is a cappuccino and what is in a cappuccino? A cappuccino coffee is the second most popular coffee, shortly after the latte. Although, it’s taste is a lot stronger than the latte’s. A cappuccino is made up of the perfect balance of espresso, steamed milk and frothed milk and is traditionally served in a larger cup with a chocolate dusting. Often when served, in Cafés, a pattern formed by chocolate dusting will be displayed on the foam. It is pronounced ka-puh-chee-now and it originated in Italy, around the same period as the latte did.
A cappuccino is approximately 180ml in a standard cappuccino cup, made with 25ml espresso and 85ml milk and the milk’s froth creates the remaining volume. To complete the cappuccinos' classic look, add a dusting of chocolate to rest on the foam. It’s also a choice some people make to add flavoured syrups for a sweeter taste or different dustings such as cinnamon for a spicier tang.
Now you know what a cappuccino is, but what does it actually mean? The definition of a cappuccino is quite simply a coffee made with espresso and steamed milk with a frothy layer of milk to complete its classic look.
The classic drink, like the latte, first came to Europe and America in the 1980’s. Its origins lie in Italy where the story of the coffee’s name is quite interesting and rather unusual. According to the Italians, the name was given to the coffee because the colour of an espresso and frothy milk have visual similarities to the colour of the Capuchin robe worn by the Capuchin friar - members of the Franciscan orders of monks, founded in the 16th century. Now, we bet you never knew that!
It’s safe to say that the cappuccino is one of the healthier coffee options. Whilst the coffee doesn’t contain any added sugars, there are still some sneaky ways that sugar can slip its way into the drink. Roughly 4.88g of sugar is contained within the milk, although using cow’s milk alternatives such as soy, almond or coconut milk can help reduce these sugars for a healthier option. There are approximately 57 calories in a 180ml serving and a moderate amount of caffeine - 78.2mg.
How do you tell the difference between the two delicious coffees that are the cappuccino and the macchiato?
Well that’s easy; it’s all in the measurements! A cappuccino is known for having perfectly balanced ratios of espresso, steamed milk and foamy milk on top. Whereas, the macchiato has a base of steamed milk, two shots of espresso and a fine layer of milky foam; the coffee ratio is higher than the milk, giving it a much stronger taste. And again, to finish off the classic look of the cappuccino, just add a sprinkle of chocolate powder to the foam.
A cappuccino is a popular coffee drink traditionally made with equal parts of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. It starts with a shot of espresso, which is a strong coffee brewed by forcing nearly boiling water through finely-ground coffee beans.
The second layer consists of steamed milk, which adds creaminess and body to the drink, achieved by heating the milk with a steam wand to create a smooth texture. The top layer is a thick layer of milk foam, created by introducing air into the milk with a steam wand, resulting in a light, frothy texture that insulates the drink and keeps it warm.
