ViewThe Macchiato coffee, pronounced ma-kee-aa-tow, is one of the less recognised coffees amongst them all. There are two types of Macchiatos, the espresso and the latte. The Espresso Macchiato, also known as the original Macchiato is a shot of espresso, slightly diluted by 1-2 teaspoons of milk - this drink has the highest ratio of espresso to milk and is served in a short glass. The Latte Macchiato is a sweeter, layered drink and is made up of adding one shot or half of a shot of espresso to creamy steamed milk, topped with a velvety foam layer and is served in a tall glass.
The Macchiato is an espresso coffee drink topped with a small amount of foamed or steamed milk which allows the strong taste of espresso to shine through. If you find the Espresso too strong but a Cappuccino too weak, then you can meet in the middle and try the Macchiato.
Although it's never really clear where any coffee drink originates from, it is believed that the Macchiato’s origins lie in Italy and was first distinguished in the eighties. The word ‘Macchiato’ stems from baristas who needed to show their waiting staff the difference between an espresso shot and an espresso with a dash of milk in it. The addition of milk to the espresso is known as ‘marked’ or ‘stained’ - a simple but sweet story of origin.
If you’re an iced coffee lover, then you’ll be surprised to know that when you ice a Macchiato, it becomes something very different from the original hot Macchiato coffee because when you ice a Macchiato, more milk and cream is required. You can also top this drink with delicious creams and syrups to sweeten its flavour.
Now, when trying to tell a Latte from a Macchiato, it can be quite difficult as it depends on what type of Macchiato you choose. A Macchiato, often referred to as an Espresso Macchiato differs from a Latte as it does not have any milk foam. A Latte Macchiato differs from a Latte as it is made in reverse - stick with me here! In a Latte, the espresso is added first and is then followed by steamed milk and finally, a layer of frothed milk.
Mmm, we could do with a Macchiato after that!
