ViewOur page will tell you all there is to know about the mocha coffee and what is in a mocha.
The drink mocha is a chocolatey coffee; perfect for people with a sweet tooth! It is pronounced mo-kuh and originates from the port of Al Mokka in Yemen, where the type of bean is shipped from to make this delicious coffee.
So, what is mocha coffee and how is this tasty drink made? A shot of espresso is mixed with a chocolate powder or syrup, closely followed by milk or cream - you choose! It is similar to the latte’s recipe, in the sense of their measurements; ⅓ espresso and ⅔ steamed milk. The difference is the chocolate flavour that is added in a mocha and this can either be milk chocolate or dark chocolate. A mocha is often complimented with a dollop of squirty cream and a dusting of chocolate to give it an even more inviting appearance. How irresistible!
The definition of a mocha is quite simple, it simply means a coffee infused with chocolate. The drink is favoured by chocolate fans who are able to appreciate coffee with a generous dash of chocolate pleasantness.
It is believed the term ‘mocha’ originated from the mocha bean which is imported from the ports of Al Mokka in Yemen, a coastal city along the Red Sea, and played a vital part in trading coffee in the 15th to the 18th century. Mocha beans are known for their natural sweet chocolate flavour, so what better way to make use of such a thing than to create a coffee with it? We certainly approve!
It’s not a secret that the mocha drink is one of the most sugar and calorie-packed coffee out there. On average, the drink contains 25.6g of sugar, 183 calories and roughly 105mg of caffeine. Choosing alternative milks such as coconut, soy and almond milk can make the drink slightly less fattening, but just as delicious. But don’t forget that these figures don’t include the calories and sugars included in the whipped cream and marshmallows you might additionally add on!
The two coffees bare differences based on their taste, appearance and even origin. Whilst the cappuccino originated from Italy, the mocha has origins from Yemen. The mocha is famously known for its sweet chocolatey taste and is often decorated with whipped cream, chocolate shavings and marshmallows. The cappuccino is served with a frothy milk foam, whereas the mocha is not. Despite their vast differences, we think both drinks are just as delicious and inviting.
