Guide To The Different Types Of Tea Varieties

Find out about the different types of tea varieties.

View Our Tea

All types of teas come from the camellia sinensis plant but the different varieties of tea come down to the way that the plant is grown, harvested and crafted. Whilst there are many different varieties of tea, not all are actually true teas. Some type of teas, such as herbal teas, aren’t made from the Camellia sinensis plant so aren’t technically teas - but they are still thought of in the same light.

Below are some of the most popular types of tea varieties, as well as tea-like beverages such as herbal teas.

Black Tea

Black tea is one of the most popular tea types. It is fully oxidised which helps to bring out the strong flavours. It often has a strong, malty and full-bodied flavour profile. There are many varieties of black tea which includes Assam Tea, as well as Darjeeling tea.

Green Tea

Green tea is a popular tea variety and is made from the Camellia sinensis plant. It is unoxidised and contains less caffeine than black tea. It is fired or steamed shortly after picking in order to prevent the oxidation process. It often has a fresh flavour profile that can be slightly grassy. Popular varieties of green tea include Sencha, Matcha and Gunpowder Green tea.

White Tea

White tea is a variety of tea made from young leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. The leaves are the least processed of all teas which gives the tea a delicate and naturally sweet flavour. It can often taste fruity or floral. White tea contains little caffeine. Popular varieties of white tea includes White Peony and Silver Needle.

Oolong Tea

Oolong tea is made from the Camellia sinensis plant and is a partially oxidised tea - meaning it is in between green tea and black tea. It is produced as a whole leaf tea. The flavour profile ranges a lot subject to the oxidation levels of the tea. Popular types of oolong tea includes Milk Oolong and Ginseng Oolong.

Pu’er Tea

Pu’er tea, also known as Pu-Erh tea, is a fermented tea which is often more expensive than other tea varieties. As soon as the leaves are harvested the process to stop oxidation immediately starts and they are put straight into giant woks. The whole production process of Pu’er tea contributes to the unique flavour that is often dark and rich.

Rooibos Tea

Rooibos tea is a caffeine free tea that has a rich and earthy flavour that can sometimes have floral hints. This type of tea is made from fermented leaves of the Aspalathus linearis shrub, which is where other names such as ‘red tea’ come from. The plant natively grows in South Africa. Popular rooibos teas include Rooibos Orange and Rooibos Tiramisu.

Herbal Tea

Herbal teas are made from infused dried herbs, fruits and flowers. As they are made from herbs, they do not contain caffeine which makes herbal teas a popular night time drink. This type of tea consists of a variety of delicate flavours to choose from because of what they are made from. Popular herbal tea varieties include Peppermint, Hibiscus and Chamomile.

Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is a type of herbal tea that comes from a fragrant herb in the Asteraceae plant family. It is a popular tea to drink before bed. It is made from dried flowers from the chamomile plant and it contains no caffeine.

Hibiscus Tea

Hibiscus tea is a type of herbal tea that is made from the hibiscus plant. The plant is grown in tropical regions across the world. It is a red drink that has a sweet flavour. It is a refreshing drink and is popular as an iced tea.

Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea is a popular herbal tea that is made with leaves from the mint plant. As expected, it has a minty flavour. It is one of the most popular herbal teas
