ViewCoffee is grown in over 70 countries across the world. It is traditionally grown along the “coffee belt” which sits in between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, this includes Central & South America, Central Africa, India, and SouthEast Asia. The largest producer is Brazil, who produce more than a third of the world's coffee. For the coffee plant to grow, the location needs to have the right altitude, weather and soil. Once all of these factors are met, the plant can begin to grow and produce the coffee beans that we love. But, have you ever wondered exactly where is coffee from and how is coffee made?
We will start by introducing you to the plant that produces the beans that make our much loved coffee drinks - the Coffea plant. The plants are bush-like and if the farmers don’t trim them then they can grow up to 8 metres tall. It is most common for farmers to trim them to around 6ft in order to keep them manageable. The coffee plant lives for around 30 - 40 years but this can be extended with the right care.
Coffee beans are actually a seed and this seed is found inside cherries that grow on the plant. They commonly grow in pairs, a bit like peanuts. Farmers have to wait a while for these seeds to grow. After a year the plants produce white jasmine-like flowers, after another three to five years they produce fruit and then after that the plant will be producing coffee beans at a rate that is sustainable for commercial production.
Picking the cherries is a crucial part of the coffee production process. Once ripped, they turn a bright red colour and are ready to be picked. This can be done mechanically, however, the best quality coffee will be handpicked. Typically a farm hand would pick 80-100 kilos of cherries per day. Handpicking gives us the best quality, the highest yield and maintains the plant health.
With coffee being grown all over the world there are many varieties of coffee plants that each produce different types of coffee beans. There are over 120 types of coffee plants producing different beans - but we mostly use Robusta and Arabica beans. There are a lot of differences in these beans from the growing conditions to the flavours.
There are lots of coffee producing countries with over 50 growing coffee beans. Some of the largest producer of coffee in the world are Brazil, Colombia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sumatra, Vietnam, Indonesia, Honduras, Peru and India. Each coffee growing countries produces their own coffee bean that has unique flavours. Brazil has been the world’s largest coffee producer for over 150 years. As the largest coffee growing country, Brazil has the perfect climate for growing coffee and can grow both Arabica and Robusta beans. Coffee from Brazil has a creamy body with subtle chocolate and caramel notes. Colombia produces 100% Arabica coffee beans which often have mild fruity flavours. On the other hand, coffee growing in Uganda is mainly Robusta coffee beans. You might wonder if you can grow coffee in the UK, unfortunately due to the climate this isn't possible.
The coffee bean belt is the part of the world where coffee is grown. It is situated between the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer, 2.5 degrees north and south of the equator. This belt covers approximately 70 countries. The main coffee producers within the belt have the tropical climates and the perfect environments for growing coffee. The coffee belt is around 3200 miles. In order for good quality coffee to be produced, the right conditions must be met.
