Originating in China’s Fujian province, Oolong shares some qualities with both green and black tea. Though not as strong as a black tea, the light, refreshing and perhaps more subtly sophisticated characteristics of oolong lend it an inspiring complexity.
Oolong is steadily becoming more sought-after by discerning tea lovers looking for an invigorating, full-bodied brew with an interesting and diverse flavour profile.
Cafe Du Monde offers a range of the highest quality Oolong teas sourced from award-winning and world-celebrated luxury brand, Newby Tea of London.

A traditional Chinese tea, the word ‘Oolong’ means ‘Black Dragon’ in Mandarin, perhaps due to the distinctive shape of the rolled leaves as they begin to unfurl whilst this mysterious tea is steeping.
Oolong starts life on the same bush as its green and black cousins, Camellia Sinensis. Its individual character starts to emerge when the larger leaves at the bottom of the bush are picked, left to wither and are then rolled. This process takes less time than for black tea, creating a semi-oxidised, rather than fully oxidised, leaf.
Skilled artisan techniques employed during processing create a tea with a flavour that varies from light and floral to dark, woodsy and mineral, always pleasantly evolving in the cup as it steeps.
Oolong tea has long been traditionally enjoyed not only for its taste, but for its medicinal value. A cup of brewed oolong tea contains small amounts of calcium, magnesium and potassium as well as health-boosting polyphenols and other antioxidants.
Oolong is also high in an amino acid called L-theanine, which studies show may improve brain activity, promote better sleep quality and soothe the nervous system.
Although much depends on the growing conditions and processing involved, a cup of oolong contains about 38mg of caffeine per brew, less than black tea at 70mg, and slightly more than a cup of green tea, which contains around 29mg on average.
“I have worked with Café du Monde in various roles for 12 years, having first learned about them from an article in The Caterer. Their coffee is by far the best I have sampled, equalled only by the first-class support service they provide. They are, without doubt, my number one supplier.”
